As a beauty professional, the safety and comfort of your clients should always be your number one priority. This is true for all types of beauty therapy treatments, from nail technology to spray tanning and other skin treatments. However, safety is particularly important for any beauty therapists who wish to perform IPL or laser treatments, piercings, tattooing, or tattoo removal.
If you’re interested in performing any of these beauty treatments, it’s essential that you complete the appropriate laser safety or infection control course. Read on to learn more about these beauty courses and what they’ll teach you.
Understanding the requirements
In Australia, work health and safety in the beauty industry is regulated by a number of laws that vary from state to state. Overall, the goal of state legislation on this topic is to protect the safety of clients by ensuring that beauty therapists meet a minimum standard of training and skills when performing light-based and penetrative skin treatments.
Currently, the states of Queensland, Western Australia, and Tasmania require beauty therapists wishing to offer IPL or laser treatments to complete a laser safety course. The Queensland and Western Australian health departments also require anyone intending to enter the piercing, cosmetic tattooing, and tattooing industries to complete an HLTINF005 Maintain infection prevention for skin penetration treatments course at a registered provider.
Our laser safety course
Delivered online with support from our beauty educators with more than 30 years’ industry experience, our laser safety course is ideal for all beauty therapists who want to operate an IPL/laser machine in Queensland, Western Australia, or Tasmania. Over the course of up to 3 months, you’ll gain all the skills and knowledge you need to provide safe IPL and laser treatments to clients with various skin concerns.
At the end of the course, you’ll graduate with a laser safety license that meets all the relevant AS/NZS Standards and can be used as part of an application for a radiation use license in Queensland, Western Australia, or Tasmania. You’ll also have the option to progress to a Diploma of Salon Management SHB50216 that includes training in providing and designing IPL/Laser Hair Reduction treatments at one of our three campuses.
Our infection prevention and control course
In Queensland and Western Australia, services including body piercing, tattooing, tattoo removal, and hair implants are all considered “higher risk services” that require all practitioners to have the appropriate training in Infection Control for personal services. Our HLTINF005 Maintain infection prevention for skin penetration treatments course is a direct pathway to obtaining the skills and knowledge you need to work in this industry, and is recognised nationwide.
The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on infection control skills, equipping our graduates with the knowledge they need to keep their clients safe and healthy. Flexible study options mean the course is suitable for recent graduates and working professionals alike and can be completed in just 3 months.
Beauty salon safety is everyone’s responsibility
As a professional beauty therapist, your job isn’t just to make all your clients feel beautiful: It’s also your responsibility to ensure that they are safe and comfortable at all times. To do this, make sure that you undertake all the relevant training and obtain the proper certificates and licenses before providing higher risk services including laser and IPL treatments, piercings, and tattooing.
