Film sets and fashion shows: life as a Screen & Media makeup student

Runways. Film sets. Bridal shoots. For most people, these settings sound like glamorous daydreams – but for Demi International Screen & Media (Specialist Makeup) students, they’re part of the weekly timetable.

The CUA51020 Diploma of Screen & Media (Specialist Makeup) doesn’t just teach eyeliner wings and special effects in a classroom. It’s a course built around real-world experiences, where students swap textbooks for backstage passes and learn what it’s really like to work in the industry.

From styling models for major fashion events to mastering on-set etiquette with film directors, Demi students step out of class and into the spotlight, building skills, portfolios and confidence long before graduation.

Lights, camera, makeup!

Forget theory-only learning. At Demi, students enjoy a balance of in-class and on-site learning. This year alone, they’ve prepped models at two major fashion shows, created bridal looks for photoshoots at Luv Bridal, and thrown it back to the sixties with a themed shoot at Rick’s Garage.

“Our students have worked on short films with the Sunshine Coast Screen Collective and Sunny Coast Showdown – some of which have gone on to win awards internationally,” shares Demi International makeup trainer Melissa Christie. “They’ve also assisted professional artists on bridal jobs, with one student having the confidence to take on her first solo wedding recently.”

And when the call came from Jaggi Entertainment to help on their latest feature film, the entire class jumped on board for two full days. “It was an amazing chance to experience the fast-paced environment of a film set and learn on-set etiquette,” says Melissa.

The unexpected skills learned from a film set

Film makeup also comes with its own technical challenges. Continuity is key, and it’s a puzzle students learn to solve.

“In film, scenes are shot out of order, so if you’re creating a bruise, you need to know what it looks like on day one versus day five,” Melissa explains. “You might be shooting the ‘day five’ scene first, then the next day you’re asked to create a fresh bruise. Students learn how to layer colours, textures and shading to make it believable.”

That level of detail is what turns classroom techniques into professional artistry.

Confidence from day one

For many, the biggest surprise is how quickly students get to work with real clients.

“I was shocked at how hands-on it is,” says Evan. “We were using new products and working with clients straight away. It really boosted my confidence.”

Emily agrees. “What surprised me most was the amount of freedom you get with clients. You’re learning, but you also gain confidence by doing the treatments yourself.”

That early exposure helps students graduate feeling ready for the industry, not just qualified on paper.

The thrill of creative shoots

It’s not all catwalks and film sets. Students also take part in creative photo shoots designed to stretch their imagination and portfolio.

One week it might be bridal gowns and glowing complexions at Luv Bridal, the next a 1960s-inspired shoot at Rick’s Garage complete with retro hair and makeup.

“These projects test their adaptability,” Melissa says. “They’re working across different skin tones, textures, and hair types. It builds versatility and teaches them how to bring a creative brief to life.”

With professional photographers capturing their work, students leave each term with polished images that showcase their skills.

The Demi difference

While many courses stick to the classroom, the trainers and staff at Demi actively seek out opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience. That’s the difference.

“I look for opportunities for the students to come along with me,” Melissa explains. “It’s not a course requirement, but it’s invaluable. These experiences push them outside their comfort zone – and that’s where the growth happens.”

It’s the kind of learning that simply can’t be replicated on campus. Backstage chaos at a fashion show. The pressure of getting ten models ready in ten minutes. The adrenaline of a live shoot. These moments teach not just artistry, but teamwork, communication and problem-solving under pressure.

Success stories already in motion

The results speak for themselves. One student launched her own makeup business mid-course, creating a website and social pages and booking her first bridal party… with five clients in one day. Another, just 16, landed a role at MECCA, gaining in-store training while still studying.

Past graduates have gone on to senior management roles with Sephora, freelanced on feature films across the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, and Brisbane, and even worked alongside Australian stars like Georgie Parker and Lincoln Lewis.

“It’s one thing for me to tell them they’re ready,” says Melissa. “It’s another when a director calls them back to work on set. That’s when their confidence really takes off.”

Learning more than just makeup

The Diploma isn’t just about perfecting artistry, it’s also about building the skills to run a business. Students learn how to market themselves, communicate with clients, and manage bookings.

“Makeup is a big part of it, but so are all the interpersonal skills,” Melissa explains. “We even do role plays of potential phone calls or emails, so students are prepared for real client interactions. Those business skills make all the difference.”

With structured assessments designed to reflect industry scenarios, Demi ensures students graduate with more than creative flair, they graduate with the practical know-how to thrive.
