Government Legislation

Businesses that offer higher risk services, need to have a ‘higher risk personal appearance service’ license, and staff and operators need to have this unit to provide these services:
  • Body piercing, other than closed ear or nose piercing
  • Implanting natural or synthetic substances into a person’s skin (e.g. hair or beads)
  • Scarring or cutting a person’s skin using a sharp instrument to make a permanent mark, pattern, or design
  • Tattooing (including cosmetic tattooing or semipermanent make-up)
  • Tattoo removal (from 1 July 2016).

Maintain Infection Prevention for Skin Penetration Treatments

Online Training

In this unit you will learn the knowledge that you need to become a piercer or tattooist who meets the right government regulations. You will learn how to be a safe practitioner who understands how to use infection prevention in a skin penetration environment. You will learn:

  • How to maintain infection prevention for skin penetration treatments (body piercing, tattooing, cosmetic tattoo, and related industries)
  • Clinic compliance for state, territory and local council requirements
  • How to identify infection risks to clients, yourself and colleagues
  • How to manage and monitor infection control risks
  • The Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice for Sterilisation procedures
  • Cleaning, disinfection, hygiene and correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Graduate with your nationally recognised statement of attainment within 3 months.

On completion of this unit, you will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment for the unit HLTINF005 Infection Prevention for Skin Penetration Treatments to display in your clinic and satisfy Qld and WA regulations.

There are no prerequisites for this course. Intermediate level computer skills and access to the internet is essential. You will also need access to industry standard sterilising equipment* (e.g. Autoclave) to successfully complete this unit.
