This Nationally Accredited Unit is a QLD Health mandatory requirement for anyone involved in a personal services industry that involves skin penetration. This course can be completed entirely online if you have access to the use of an Autoclave. Contact Us for more options.
Government Legislation
Businesses that offer higher risk services, need to have a ‘higher risk personal appearance service’ license, and staff and operators need to have this unit to provide these services:
- Body piercing, other than closed ear or nose piercing
- Implanting natural or synthetic substances into a person’s skin (e.g. hair or beads)
- Scarring or cutting a person’s skin using a sharp instrument to make a permanent mark, pattern, or design
- Tattooing (including cosmetic tattooing or semipermanent make-up)
- Tattoo removal (from 1 July 2016).

What you will learn
In this unit, you will learn the knowledge that you need to become a piercer or tattooist who meets the right government regulations. You will learn how to be a safe practitioner who understands how to use infection prevention in a skin penetration environment. You will learn:
- How to maintain infection prevention for skin penetration treatments (body piercing, tattooing, cosmetic tattoo, and related industries)
- Clinic compliance for state, territory, and local council requirements
- How to identify infection risks to clients, yourself, and colleagues
- How to manage and monitor infection control risks
- The Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice for Sterilisation procedures
- Cleaning, disinfection, hygiene, and correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Graduate with your nationally recognised Statement of Attainment within 3 months.
On completion of this unit, you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the unit HLTINF005 Maintain infection prevention for skin penetration treatments to display in your clinic and satisfy Qld and WA regulations.
There are no prerequisites for this course. Intermediate level computer skills and access to the internet are essential. You will also need access to industry standard sterilising equipment* (e.g. Autoclave) to complete this unit.
This course is delivered online. You can take it at your own pace, giving you the flexibility to work, play and take care of your other commitments. You will have 3 months to complete the entire course. The course uses online learning technology to give you structured learning and all the resources you need. You will have access to a tutor and one-on-one support sessions for the duration of your course.

My Beauty story began back in 2005 when I studied Beauty Therapy. I have been in the Beauty Industry for 16 years now. In this time, I have worked for many Beauty salons, as well as owning my own Salon. For the past 8 years, I have been employed as a Dermal & Laser Therapist, I hold a full license through Radiation Health Queensland. Performing advanced treatments such as Laser Hair Removal, Vascular Laser treatments, laser pigmentation, Skin needling, clinical peels, and laser rejuvenation.

Kym Levy
Kym has worked in the health Industry now for 11 years in the Massage and Nursing professions. She has worked with people who require rehabilitation post injury and the sporting community. She also has a love for postural re-alignment and working with Children on relaxation and balance pre and post their sports activities.
