Online studying has grown over the last decade and is expected to continue. The numbers grow each year with statistics showing students enrolled in online studies exclusively, at 15.4%. One in every six students currently studies online.
Students taking part-time online courses grew to 33.1% and in some cases 48% which is proof that more students prefer online studying. Evolving student demographics relate to employment and career goals while others can’t face the commute.
This is, in particular, true for older students, stay-at-home moms and unemployed individuals. Taking at least one course to diversify, expand horizons, learn a new skill for job improvement or entering a different jobs market are some of the reasons.
Online vs Campus
Surveys show that students choose online studies for the flexibility and convenience offered by online programs as one of the top reasons. Over 60% of online students are parents while the rest reported that they are currently employed. Additional reasons for choosing online courses range from a major problem which is commuting to an existing commitment like family and work.
21% of students reported that the only way that they could pursue their field of interest, is through online study. The reputation of an institution and course specifics are other reasons why campus studies are not the number one option anymore.
The flexibility online studying offers to students is a huge benefit. It is the preferred option for those with work and family commitments as online learning moulds with current schedules. Students log into courses online at suitable times that work for them as opposed to attending lectures at specific times.
The basic and most notable trade-off that students get with online studies, however, is the need for motivation when in the comfort of their own homes. In these instances, it is advised to develop strategies to remain up to date with work and setting aside time for assignments.
